Marilyn Hartness is a survivor of a Stage IV rare form of blood cancer: mantel cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She is a spry art teacher at Wingate University who loves to ride horses and cross-trains in swimming. Her indomitable spirit is reflected in the memoir she wrote - Brave the Day: an Account of Surviving Cancer.
One day she was kicked in the stomach by a young colt. The trauma caused her spleen to rupture. When she healed slowly, not regaining her normal strength as expected by her physically active life, her husband referred her to an internist (being a doctor himself).
