Children’s author Bernadine Feagins has lost a family member to cancer and has captured that experience and share it in a positive way for children in her debut book Kids Dream Big! She has graciously agreed to be interviewed on the Save the Child Blog today.
Margaret: What inspired you to write Kids Dream Big!
Bernadine: My inspiration came from a family member who had cancer and I lost her. I was also inspired by my love for children. After dealing with this illness, I’ve learned it is better to empower yourself with knowledge and recognize the issues cancer survivors are facing . I was clueless in the beginning but after researching the different types of cancer diseases I am more informed about treatment , depression , loss and recovery .
Margaret: Do you have expertise in counseling or other fields in helping children deal with self esteem, career choices and or family loss.
Bernadine: My expertise came from dealing with a family member with cancer. It inspirer me to write a book called ” Kids Dream Big. ” I wanted to help children. Who lose a family member from cancer to find the strength to go on . While inspiring children to think about career choices, self esteem issues and making life livable and tolerable after a loss.
Margaret: What kind of research did you do to write this book?
Bernadine: My research came from “life experience” dealing with what god gave me and over coming it! I picked up booklets on cancer treatment and talked to a lot of doctors and patients. I just wanted to write about what, I know and pass the positive information and experiences on to children.
Margaret: Have you won any awards for this book?
Bernadine: Yes,I won a kids Choices Award from the magazine ” TEENSMUDGEMAGAZINE ” for best pick children book. You can purchase past article postings such as ones about my book debut ” Kids Dream Big!”
